The honey badger labor market<\/a> woke up on Friday and chose violence, biting the legs of any job recession bear it could find. The first reaction from the bond market was to shoot up bond yields and mortgage rates<\/a> went higher. However, as the day progressed, bond yields decreased from the peak. <\/p>\n

What is going on with the U.S. labor market? The answer is that we are just working back to normal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Jobs data<\/strong><\/h2>\n

From BLS<\/a>:<\/strong>\u00a0Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 336,000 in September, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.8 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Job gains occurred in leisure and hospitality; government; health care; professional, scientific, and technical services; and social assistance<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Nothing has changed from my long-term view on the labor market recovery premise<\/a> I have written about for years. If COVID-19 had never happened, based on our population growth and job growth data pre-COVID-19, we should have between 157 million and 159<\/strong> million <\/strong>jobs today. Until we get into this ballpark range, it’s all make-up demand. <\/strong>Today, we stand at 156,874,000,<\/strong> so we are close to breaking into the makeup labor data pool.<\/p>\n
